They are interested in a Manga, and they were hearing the lecture seriously.

We had a Tea Ceremony on the 25th of January!
At first students changed the cloths to a Yukata.
The yukata suited them very well！

Next, students made Japanese tea. The teacher of Japanese Tea Ceremony gave a demonstration to the students. And taught them how to drink the tea.

Students were making tea happily and seriously.

oshibori vs wiping towels

We Germans like the Tokyo a lot, not only the Fukuoka or the Düsseldorf. So sometimes I go to Tokyo. When I was at Tokyo last time I went to eat in my lunch break in a little ramen shop in Asakusa. I had looked at the menu and ordered, and then I thought, something is missing, but I did not know what it was.

Suddenly, when there were mysteriously some little brown towels on the top of the counter . . . I remembered . . yes . . . the staff had forgotten the oshibori, the little towel to wash your hands with before eating. So I instantly took one of them and started to wash my hands. Lo and behold - it was not cozy warm but icy cold. Plus a little later I realised it smelled really bad, and now also my hands smelled really bad. Then I looked around and I saw there was a waitress wiping the counters and desks down with these little brown towels. Hazukashiiiiiiii . . . they were not oshibori but wiping towels.

Of course the whole staff had seen me washing my hands with their dirty cloth, but being Japanese, they pretended otherwise, looking away. But when I went to the otearai to clean my hands, it was occupied. Mendokusaiiiiiii . . . finally the door opened and a waitress came out, she had been cleaning there - but this time with a black cloth, not with a brown one. I was relieved. and a short time later my hands smelled of soap again. Needless to say that when I came back there was my soup ready at my place cooling off.

OK I had been at the butt of THAT joke but next time when I go into this ramenya I will take my friend A-san with me. He is known for taking the oshibori not only for his hands, but also for his face. And then after wards the whole time through he is wiping and wiping the table again and again . . . let`s see what happens . . .

Name:Steven Lian

Where are you from?
I’m from the north east of China, a place called Dalian. It’s a rainy place, but with nice people and nature.

Why did you came to Japan?
I came to Japan as an exchange student, I am currently graduating as a bachelor of economics.

Why are you doing an internship?
Because I wanted to experience what work is like in a Japanese organization. Asahi Nihongo is interesting because of the multiple cultures in the language school including Japanese. The website and explanation that they gave was also very good. It is very easy for a foreigner without a lot of experience to get an internship through Asahi Nihongo. They guide you through all the various pitfalls and they are nice people!

What do you think of Asahi Nihongo?
I think Asahi Nihongo is a friendly place where it is easy to work. They work very hard but in an easy way with good explanation. I think I am learning a lot here.

What are you working on?
I am currently working on a CMS (Joomla) updating and translatingwebsites. I am also working on the structure of these websites andhow we can make the information on the pages better in general.

What do you recommend in Fukuoka?
Get tonkotsu ramen at Ipudon ramen! It is really good. I also like the Fukuoka tower, awesome view and a nice atmosphere.Hobbies:I like to take a swim to exercise. I also like a good book (currently reading the Asahi elementary school newspaper for Japanese practice) and I like a good onsen! Maybe that’s my biggest hobby, taking a nice relaxing onsen. Beppu is only a day trip away so that is good, you should go sometime!

New tutorial teacher Fukuzawa Yoshiko!

Our Wednesday tutorials have a new teacher! Yoshiko Fukuzawa will teach you On an extra lesson every Wednesday from 16:30 to 17:25 brushing up on your Japanese with interesting subjects.

Yoshiko-san is a kind teacher who has a lot of experience in teaching Japanese. She is also an English teacher at an elementary school in Fukuoka. Yoshiko-san is familiar with our method of teaching and looks forward helping everyone increase their level of Japanese.

In her free time Yoshiko-san likes to inline skate and have a nice swim when she gets the chance. "I like sports" she says. "I like all kinds of sports but lately I've been more into inline-skating for exercise. Swimming I still do sometimes, but in Japan it is a bit difficult. I also like to travel, so when I was in Hawaii I swam a lot.

About teaching at Asahi Nihongo she has this to say: "Well, I think Asahi Nihongo is a great school for learning Japanese. I think that teaching here is very enjoyable because of the great differences in nationalities and cultures. It is nice to teach in such an interesting environment. I hope to be able to make the lessons interesting, enjoyable, but mostly worthwhile! I look forward to meeting you! Every Wednesday a tutorial will be held at Asahi Nihongo school. Sumo 14-11-2011!

Lots of things happening in Fukuoka this week! We went to one of the bigger events. Sumo!! There are only 6 tournaments, or Basho, every year so it is a pretty special cultural experience to be able and go to one of the games. We did of course and as our 12 man strong group invaded the Sumo stadium we were all amazed by the hustle and bustle that involves one of the tournaments.

A sumo tournament takes around 15 days to complete. We went in the first week on one of the first days so it would be less crowed. Now this does not mean it isn't crowded. There were people everywhere, sumo and spectators. There was food, drinks, shouting. Loads of rituals with singing and drums. And then you haven't even gotten to the fight yet. Wrestlers poised to strike at each other but first trying to stare their opponent down. They sometimes do this for a couple of minutes before they actually start the fight, cleansing the ring with salt every time they enter it. A true spectacle of culture.

The fights of course are also great things to watch. Bursts of energy that last a couple of seconds. Sometimes ending spectacularly with a sumo wrestler flying out of the ring! Needles to say everyone enjoyed the tournament a lot and we definitely plan to go back next year and take more of you guys and girls to watch this exciting Japanese sport. Please join!

Welcome Party 2011-11-11!

Last week a large group of new students arived from Australia. Twelve people who will be staying with us for the next 6 weeks! Now, we don't mind having an excuse for a little party which is exactly what we did.

To give everyone, inlcuding our other students, a warm welcome there was good food to be eaten and a great atmosphere to enjoy on Friday the 11th of the 11th of 2011. We are happy to say a lot of people came. So many in fact that we had to held the party on two floors of our school building! Thank you guys and girls for such a great outcome!

We also had a nice number of Japanese people which meant that we could introduce language partners to each other and have everybody making some new friends and try out or practice the language that they are studying.

What's in a name. Asahi beer brewery visit 04-11-2011

Asahi means sunrise in Japanese. A fitting name for our school where so many of us have learned to read, write and speak the language of Japan, the land of the rising sun.

It also happens to be the name of one of Japan's leading beer companies. Asahi Breweries. Asahi holds around 40% of the Japanese beer market. This alone is reason enough to have a look, but because it shares a part of our name it is almost a necessity. Joking aside though, it is a rather interesting cultural experience full of interesting facts and figures. Not to mention the complementary beers after the tour!

Today we went with a good group of students and our designated driver for the day, Alexander. We had loads of fun, learned some interesting things and had a couple of drinks. No beer for Alex though, but thankfully Rani did not drink either so they could enjoy a great number of non-alcoholic drinks that Asahi also makes. Good stories and laughter on the way back to school. Please join us next time! You won't regret it.

A whole day of activities! 03-11-2011 Mt Mikazuki

What do you do when its the national "culture" day in Japan? You go and experience Japanese culture, that's what. Now culture is a very broad term. We like to think that culture is not only going to museums and temples, but also experience what a normal day person would experience when living in Fukuoka, Japan.

That is why Thursday was a good good day. The weather was nice, the temperature was nice and we took a great group of students and friends with us on a fun, normal, day-trip hiking some mountains near Fukuoka. After picking everyone up from school, the first mountain that we went to was Mikazuki. Being 272m high it is a good warm up and the awesome view made everyone hungry for more. Alex, one of Asahi Nihongo's main figures and characters, was really nice and enthousiastic to let people experience more and explain so much. You can hear his enthusiasm and love for Fukuoka and Japan when he speaks. Good for motivation!

After one more mountain it was time to fill our bellies with sushi, the perfect food after having done some exercise. Of course relaxing our muscles had to be done in a traditional onsen, which we did at the Yu no Hana onsen. PERFECT ending after a satisfying day of exercise. And what do you do when you are nice and relaxed? Right, you have good food. We closed the day at one of the traditional Fukuokan food stalls, called Yatai, on the streets of Fukuoka. Thank you Alex and everyone who joined for the great day/night. Let's do this again soon!!

Visit a foot spa (Ashiyu) 02-11-2011

Today we went to the Ashiyu Foot Spa which is located at the "New High Rise Apartment" of Minato, Chuo-ku, Fukuoka-shi near the Fukuoka Central Fresh Fish Wholesale Market. We left the school at around 1pm and arrived after a nice short walk not too long after.

Here our Asahi Nihongo group dipped and rested their feet in scorching hot water. This might sound unpleasant but it was actually very relaxing! The surroundings were also quite nice. At the small Onsen you sit with your feet and face towards the harbor, giving you an interesting view. The whole thing had a nice calm picknicky atmosphere! We chatted, had some laughs, met some locals and, most importantly, had a lot of fun!

International Party Friday 28-10-2011

Another month of Japanese classes came to an end as we held our monthly international party last Friday. The guests slowly trickled in but and to be held back with all the inviting food around. It looked so delicious we wanted to start eating right away! I would just like to say that the staff did a great job with all the excellent preparations for the party.

As usual the food was very tasty, Partly because of the effort Abe-san made in being the chef-de-okonomiyaki for the evening! Our usual cook Junko was not there but Abe did a great Job in creating the famous Asahi Nihongo dish. The level of deliciousness is Demonstrated here by Momoka, Misa-san's daughter.

Last but not least I would like to thank everyone for the great conversations, laughter and their presence our party. We hope to see you next month or at the school. Kanji can be sooo "easy"...

We Germans certainly like to make things easy, only not in our language which is supposed to be the fourth difficult language in the world.
So I was very pleased when I used my personal computer (which we call PC in Germany) last week to write an email to my buddy Kenji. Not only did I discover that PC-kun knew Kanji characters, he knew lots of them and most impressively he knew even more than I do. Whenever I completed a word in my favorite Hiragana he produced lots and lots of really cool Kanji characters to choose from.
Naturally to boast a little I took the coolest and most complicated Kanjis for my email. And I wondered how long it would take Kenji to reply who had mocked me a little because I did not like the Kanji very much before. Demo hazukashiiiiiii .... Kenji did not understand my email very much to say the least.
So he replied after 2 minutes writing that he preferred Hiragana in emails by me.
But I liked the PC-kun's help so much that I will start to use just a little more Kanji characters in the future.

Internship Report Michael-san

I had my internship at Hiroshima Co.,LTD from 8/22/2011 to 10/28/2011. Originally a liquor shop selling wines, spirits and beer, they have been around since 1957. By 1986, noticing a demand for quality, imported beers, the company changed its focus to importing specialty beer from overseas and distributing those products to other sakayas, warehouses and liquor shops in Japan. Today the company has over 227 varieties of beer including 7 seasonally limited brews. They have customers everywhere in Japan from Hokkaido to Okinawa.

Every week I worked from Monday to Thursday from 11am to 5pm with an occasional early start or overtime. My tasks were to process orders and categorize different types of customers in order to accurately calculate the correct price while observing tax regulations on alcohol. Managing shipments to customers between different warehouse locations, I also created documents for shipping purposes. At times I would team up with other co-workers to manage the small warehouse located near the office to physically assemble special orders for shipment.

Aside from making sure paperwork was properly processed, some of my most important tasks involved contacting breweries in the UK, Belgium and Austria. Negotiating both orders for large pallets of beer as well as the shipping conditions and prices from overseas were no easy task as the processes entailed communicating in both English and Japanese.
With an internship in Japan, I hoped to improve my Japanese language skills while learning to function in a professional environment. Most of everything I ever learned about business was through textbooks or in a classroom environment. Being able to experience a professional environment first hand would help me get practical hands on experience and an idea of what path I would like to follow for my future career.

Through my internship at Hiroshima CO., LTD, I was able to experience real life at a small Japanese trading company. Because it was my first time in a professional environment and it was all in Japanese, it was a very challenging, but rewarding experience. I have not yet experienced the equivalent to this environment in my own country, but I do know that I enjoyed my time here. In addition to gaining some practical experience, I was able to improve my Japanese and gain some friends along the way.

This internship was a rewarding experience. I had a lot of fun in the office and everyone was very kind to me. If I had something I didn’t understand, they didn’t mind re-explaining everything in different words even if they had to do it multiple times. Everyone was very patient with me at times I felt slow, but they didn’t mind giving me important tasks and making me feel like I was really part of the company. The experience at this company went beyond my expectations.

How you not count in Japanese!

We Germans like to count a lot, not only the beers on the Wiesn (the Oktoberfest's bavarian insider name). But I learned in my Japanese class that it is chotto more complicated in Japanese since nearly every single word comes with its own counter. But you cannot learn without trial and error, can you? (Anyway that is my motto).

So when I was invited to a family trip to the zoo by my friend Kenji's sister Fumiko san last week, I tried to boast a little with my expert japanese knowledge. Saying will your three children also come using the counter for little beings, sanbiki 三匹 (no kodomo) ... ... but Fumiko san did not look too pleased. At Asahi Nihongo we really enjoy seeing our students putting their lessons into practice and talking to Japanese people. This is one of the reasons why we organize our International Party each month.

The International Party is meant to encourage all that are attending to use the language they are studying, make new friends, learn new things, eat good food and most importantly have fun!

We had a good turnout this month. There were some great menu changes, which combined with the old favorites meant a lot of happy people! And where there are happy people there are a lot of conversations. We had a great evening and hope that everyone who was there did too. Thanks to all the staff and please join us again next time!

Can I send my luggage ahead to the school?

Yes you can send your luggage ahead to the school when you arrive in Japan. At every airport you can use an Airport Takyubin or courier service, which is relatively cheap in Japan. At one of the many courier counters in each airport you can hand in your luggage and then choose where and on which day you want your it to arrive at a selected address. This is very useful for people arriving in Japan and deciding to stay at one place for a specific period of time before travelling on to their expected destination.

One of the most popular companies is Yamamoto or KuroNeko (meaning black cat in Japanese). They are present at virtually every airport in Japan and have reasonable price for sending your luggage ahead. Please check out their website.

On the 20th September,we visited some places in the City of Fukuoka with Elisa.

First,we went to Ankokuji.

Then,we went to 100yen-shop,Tenjin underground shopping center,Junkudo,and Rainbow plaza.

Finally,we went to Kego Shrine.

We studied about how to do Tyozu(cleansing of hands).

Elisa said "Fukuoka is beautiful".

There are a lot of enjoyable places in Tenjin,so please come to Tenjin more often.

Overnight trip to Kurokawa Onsen

Since August the 19th was a holiday we used the opportunity to go for an overnight trip to the Kurokawa Onsen. We left in the morning on the 18^th and our first stop was a small village called Mameta and the Sapporo factory in Hita. We were guided through the interior of the complex and were able to see how the delicious Sapporo and Yebisu beer are produced. Of course we had the chance to do some taste testing!

After that we went to the Kurokawa Onsen, which is an area famous for its hot springs. Sadly we had some rain, but our motivation didn’t drop.

The cottage which we were able to use was also in this area so we took the chance to take a dip in the hot spring before our BBQ started in the evening.

The next day we wanted to go to Mount Aso, but sadly the weather didn’t want us to reach the top and let us see one of the still active craters. Instead we used the time to visit Kuramoto castle and get some insight in the history of Japan.

In the evening we made it back home and the enjoyable overnight trip came to a close.

September 15th, a shodo activity was held at Asahi Nihongo.
Samantha, Luise, Joyce and I (Kazuaki) participated in this activity.

First, learned how to use shodo tool. Everyone wrote charcters as they liked.
Samantha chose the character for "eating"(食),Luise chose "gold" and "cat"(金・猫), and Joyce wrote "book" and "thinking"(本・思).

It was fun for me because I could see their individual personality through their selection of Kanji.

A waterfall activity!!

A waterfall training activity was held at Yoro Waterfall on Sep.15th.
Alex, Samantha, Joyce, Peter and I(Kentaro) participated in it.First of all. They changed their clothes. These clothes suited them very well!Then, we got used to the coldness of the water by slowly putting our feet in it.The water was very cold because it is september. Next, we put our hands together and bowed to the shrine. Before standing under the waterfall, we each threw salt in three directions(to our right,to our left and in front of us).Finally, we entered the water with exclamations for self-encouragement.Then we chanted "On barodaya sowaka" in a loud voice while standing under the waterfall.This phrase is Sanskrit used to call for an Indian water god. This is Alex standing under the waterfall. Their faces after waterfall training looked refreshed.According to the priest's story, waterfall training is done only in Japan.Please participate in a waterfall training because you can't experience it outside Japan.

On September 8th, an origami activity was held at Asahi Nihongo.
Samantha from America, Luise from Germany and I (Kaho) participated in this activity.

Ms. Kawaguchi taught us how to fold origami. To my surprise, she is also a student of this school and she studies German!

During the activity, we tried to speak ONLY Japanese.

There were various designs of origami. The colors were really beautiful. We also used newspaper and washi (Japanese paper.)

With these things, we made pianos, rabbits, flowers, helmets, ninja stars and cranes.

Samantha and Luise concentrated very hard on this activity. Both of them did great work. They were surprised when Ms. Kawaguchi told them that origami is taught in kindergarten in Japan.

At the end of the activity, Ms. Kawaguchi gave us presents!

One was a cute coin purse with a crane decoration and another was as origami rabbit.

We were impressed with her unexpected gifts...

Though we spent only a short time, we had a great time! I want to join in activities like this again. You can also join us whenever you like!

Tea ceremony activity!

Joyce, Samantha, Peter, Maruyama-san, and I (Kanako) joined the tea ceremony activity on September 6th.They changed to yukata as soon as they got to the Japanese style room. Everyone had yukata which had different designs and colors and they really suited each of the students. They seemed to be satisfied with the yukata they had on.
After changing, our teacher Ms. Matsuyama explained to us what the things in the Japanese style room were called. For example there was tatami, syouji, husuma, and tokonoma. Although they had some previous knowledge of the terms, they made an effort to remember all of them. Thanks to their efforts, they learned them in the end! Even though I am Japanese, I did not know much about the origins of the names so I also learned with the students.
Next, Ms. Matsuyama showed us how to make the tea and then it was the students' turn. Each of them made the tea. Then, Ms. Matsuyama taught us to say "Obannsyou itasimasu" and "osaki ni tyoudai idasimasu" to the others before drinking the tea. At first, they tasted the tea awkwardly but finally became accustomed to the bitter tea. In the end, they all drank it perfectlly!Some of them got pins and needles in their legs because they spent a long time kneeling on the floor in the formal Japanese position.
After the tea ceremony, they seemed to be sad to change from their yukata.
Before changing clothes, they had a good time taking photos with several different poses.
I thought they all would be tired because of sitting in the Japanese style for such a long time, but they looked very happy.

International Party!

An International Party was held on September 2nd.A lot of people participated and the lobby was very lively.

The students of Ritter School enjoyed talking in the German and English.The okonomiyaki Junko made was very popular. She made many okonomiyaki and everyone was happy.There was a lot of conversation and the time passed very quickly.

I always go to Fukuoka Woman University from my hometown, Saga prefecture.

I have stayed in Australia for 1 month. It was the first time I went abroad so there were many problems. But my host family was very kind so I spent wonderful 1 month in Australia.

It's lunch-time! Japanese university students meet Asahi Nihongo-Students!!

Today, on Friday, the 19th of August, the students and interns of Asahi Nihongo, had a small get-together-lunch-time-break with Japanese university students.

We all had fun chatting with the Japanese students and enjoyed the multi-language communication in English-german-japanese. Some of the students even exchanged e-mail addresses and were also planning to go out for drinking or hanging out with each other someday.

It really was a short, but enjoyable lunch-time.

Today also Max and Janina are going to leave the Asahi Nihongo School. We of course wish you all the best and good luck for your future and your studies!

It also was Nozomi-chan's and Shota-kun's last day as interns. We had great 2 weeks with them enjoying many activities. We also wish you, that you may have good luck for the future and your studies and hope to see you soon!!

Ikebana-Activity

Hello! We joined the Ikebana-Activity (=flower arrangement) yesterday.
First, We learned that there are a lot of ways, how to arrange flowers. The basic Ikebana-Arrangement are 「SIN」「SOE」and 「HIKAE」. The teacher wanted the students to choose the sunflower, which impressed them the most among all the sunflowers. Everybody chose a different flower, becuase no two minds think alike. And these main flowers should be in a set position. The space is very significant for Ikebana. Anyway they studied the teacher's example.

They arranged flowers after the teacher's instructions. They sticked the flowers into a sponge in order to take it home with them. Within the 「SIN」 arrangement, the sticks should not be too straight, because it needs to be able to change freely.Both of them arranged it with fun and Andrea enjoyed it. Andrea was already familiar with Ikebana , that's why the teacher was surprised.We asked the students what did they thoughtabout the Ikebana-Activity. They answered, "We thought, we were not able to make a goof Ikebana-Arrangement, but the results were interesting actually." Isabella said, "I was happy because I arranged sunflowers, which I like most among flowers." The students had a few problems with making the flower-arrangement , but both of them made really amazing Ikebana. As far as we are concerned, Andrea's work is elegant, and Isabella's one is cute.Many various works will be born even if you arrange just same flowers. It’s a good point of Ikebana.
Please do Ikebana again and make any new works without fail!

Marine Sports

We went to Fukuma-Beache. We were happy that it wasn`t raining.

First of all, we learned how to ride a surfboard.

Step 1, ride a wave on your knees.

Yoshiko was the first one who was able to stand on the surfboard.

Also the others were able to stand. We were stung by a jellyfish, but we did't care and enjoyed surfing.

It was a windy day and the waves were high, but the sea was so beautiful!
Finally, we took a photo of all of us. It was a really great day!!

City Tour Activity

On the 15th of August, we took our new students on our City Tour introduction. We visited some places in the city of Fukuoka.
First, we went to Ankokuji temple. We learned how to burn incense. And we took a photo.

Next, we visited 100yen-shop and Tenjin underground shopping center. There were many nice things to buy. After, we visited Junkudo(bookstore) and Big camera(camera store). Finally, we went to Kego jinja shrine.

Look at this photo. They are washing their hands and rinsing out their mouths with the water. We call it "Tyozu". It's a Japanese custom which you should do before worshipping at a shrine. After that, we worshiped and took a photo.

Fukuoka has many unique shops and Japanese cultural things most of which is for yourselves to explore. We just gave you the introduction! After the tour everyone was tired because they walked a lot. But everyone had fun!

Origami Activity
Hello, we are Yoshida and Katagiri.
On 11th of August, we had an Origami at 16:30. We participated and we experienced the activity with Isabella.

First we enjoyed looking at many kinds of origami. This was the first time for Isabella to make origami, so she was amazed by it.
When she saw a design of an origami, she said, "Looks like sharingan!" (sharingan: an eye which has a design like a wheel, which is a character, in the anime NARUTO)
Yeah, exactly! We Japanese were surprised by this because Japanese anime spreaded more than we thought!

We made a piano with an origami sheet first. It was a piece of cake. But the difficulty increased gradually.
We made these things : many kinds of boxes, a warrior's helmet, which is made of a sheet of newspaper, a shuriken for ninja, a pretty chopstick case, and a snail.
We were impressed by the snail particularly. We made a snail shell on the back of the snail perfectly.

Some of the works, we didn't know what they were until we finished them.
We are Japanese, but we realised again that origami was interesting. Isabella also very enjoyed it.

Sayonara-Party @ "Beer Garden"

On Thursday the, 10th of August, the co-workers of Asahi Nihongo went to Beer Garden at 7pm
to have a 1,5h non-stop dining and drinking-session.
It was Michael`s Sayonara Party. After a 6 months at Asahi Nihongo, he`ll finally leave Fukuoka on Thursday next week. But also Antonia will leave Fukuoka on Monday, after a one-month-stay.

That evening, we all had a lots of fun, especially the guys who kept drinking one beer after another. Time passed by fast and finally after the short one-and-a-half-hours we left the Beer Garden.

Afterwards some part of group went to some kind of Izakaya to continue the drinking.
So the evening went on and finally late at night the "party-session" found an end...

Goodbye Michael! We will miss you!

Hello, we are Yoshida and Katagiri, internship students.
On the 10th of August it was very hot.
On a such hot day, we went, together with Ruben and Jennifer, in total 4 internship students, to eat ramen for lunch! We went to a ramen store which Ruben recommended. It was called "Hakata Ramen Zen". He really recommended the 280 yen-ramen , so we ate it. We also talked in Japanese and English and we were enjoying the conversation. The ramen was good, and we were satisfied.
We all liked that price very much, since we didn't expect it to be that good. But we were also surprised that Jennifer used chopsticks very well, since it is not that easy to eat noodles with chopsticks. That was somekind of a surprise!

We had a nice time for lunch!

Airport Takyubin (courier service)

One thing that you will notice when you go traveling through japan is that Japanese never seem to carry any luggage.

This is not true, in fact Japanese have alot of luggage. They all just send it ahead to their destination through an Airport Takyubin or courier service, which is relatively cheap in Japan.

At one of the many courier counters in each airport you can hand in your lugggage and then choose where and on which day you wan t your luggage to arrive at a selected address. This is very usefull for people arriving in Japan and deciding to stay at one place for a specific period of time befor travelling on to their expected destination.

One of the most popular companies is Yamato Transport or KuroNeko (or black cat in japanese). They are present at virtually every airport in Japan and have reasonable price for sending your luggage. GOKOKU SHRINE

This is a shrine founded for the safety and well-being of our nation and situated in a leafy area near Ohori Park and Fukuoka Castle ruins. It is dedicated to the spirits of war dead since Meiji Restoration. At the entrance of the approach is a large shrine gate of 13 meters in height, which is the largest in Japan among the ones made of raw wood.

shodo activity

Yesterday, shodo activity was held at 16:15. Ms. Ulrike Walter, Ms. Andrea Jochum, Ms. Louisa Waldforst and Ms. Isabella Jud joined the activity. First, they learned the three basic features of Japanese characters: "Tome (stop)", "Hane (bend), "Harai (curve)". They were eager to learn how to write Japanese kanji.

Next, they wrote characters they liked. Isabella wrote " 閃き"/Hirameki (flash) . It's a difficult kanji, isn't it? I asked her which part is difficult to write, and she answerd "Tome" and "the balance of the kanji". How about the other girls? Ms. Louisa Waldforst wrote "強い"/Tsuyoi (strong) . This is also a difficult kanji. Ms. Andrea said to me that she liked "水”/Mizu (water) the most among these kanji, "空", "火", "土", and "水". Ms. Ulrike Walter wrote "花"/Hana (flower). She learned shodo for a year so she was a good caligrapher. I should be a better one as a Japanese!
All of them wrote own characters very well, so the teacher of shodo was surprised.

When I asked for impressions, they said, " To write a kanji is difficult but we enjoyed it!" I was happy because they had a good time. I think this was a good oportunity to get to know Japanese culture and enjoy it for foreighners. I hope they know more about it.

International Party!!

This month's International party here at Asahi Nihongo was quite festive and enjoyable. We had many people come to this month's party and it was quite a successful turnout. More than 30 people ate, drank, and mingled this past Friday. I was happy to see so many people come and beautiful faces turn up for our monthly event as you can see above.
Moreover, we also celebrated a special someone's birthday. We had a great time partying with Alexander Labus on his Birthday. It was definitely a special day for everyone and especially for Alexander who had a great time with us on his day. We sang Happy Birthday and had delicious cake provided by Maya San and Junko San. Special thanks to both Junko San and Maya San for doing a great job on Alexander's Birthday. Happy Birthday Alexander!!!
This was one of the most exciting international parties we had all year and Asahi Nihongo would like to thank everyone who came out last Friday and enjoyed themselves. We would like to encourage you all to come out to our next party on the 2nd of September and also we will be having another one on the 30th of September. My name is Jennifer Flor Henecker, but feel free to call me Jenny.

I'm 21 years old, was born in Vienna (Austria) with filipino and austrian origins.

I'm studying Japanology at the University of Vienna and I decided to make an intership at the Asahi Nihongo in Fukuoka to fulfill my studies.

My first impressions of Fukuoka was (to make it short): hot, interesting, lots of people and i-want-to-discover-more-about-it.

I'm interested into music, movies, sports (squash, tennis), hanging around with friends, shopping and just lazing around on hot summer days, probably at the beach, where water is the only way to handle the heat, or on some shadowy places.

I'm looking forward to exciting 4 coming-up weeks and try to enjoy my time here in Fukuoka.

My interests are watchig movies, Karaoke and going traveling.
My favorite movie is Harry Potter. Especially I love Ron and Hermione. I love Karaoke as I went to Kaaoke once a week when I was a high school student.
I like going to nature,such as mountains and sea. And I like Onsen, visiting Shinto shirines and museums. I have never been to foreign countries before. So I want to go to foreign countries soon.
I want to go to London in the future. I want to speak to foreigners in ALISA school because my objective is polishing my English skill. I'll do my best! Thank you.

Hello! I'm Shota Yoshida.

I'll join into ALISA school as an internship student.I'm from Omuta city in Fukuoka prefecture, which is a little rural.I go to Fukuoka International University in Dazaifu and I'm a third year student.

My hobby is watching movies, reading comic books, and practicing karate. I love "Harry Potter" movies in particular.

I study mainly languages. I often learn Japanese, English, French.

Now, I would like to go to the U.K. In the U.K., I'd like to take some pictures of the beautiful city.

I feel Japanese culture is unique and very tasteful.I like talking about Japanese culture and what people who are from different countries communicate to each other. I am interested in all these things.

An eating person

We Germans like to brag a little bit sometimes, not like the Japanese who rather than not put their inabilities in front of their abilities and skills.

Since I am a person who likes good food a lot, be it western or Japanese food, I not only wanted to impress my friends at the Izakaya with new words. I also wanted to learn from my examples and experience. So I asked my friend Kenji again for good words.

"No problem", he said, he had just the perfect word for me which was "Isseki nichou" ... meaning everybody would be instantaneously impressed AND speechless. The word for gourmet eater in Japanese is "SHOKUJIJIN" he told me (= an eating person). And since there was a kanji for eating in the word (食事人). I knew he did not set me up like with the last new words. Anyway he told me to use the word with discretion and only when he was present since bragging is a difficult thing in Japan.

So when I was in m favorite Isakaya again with my friends I nevertheless used the new word, saying (after some preliminary kampai's): "Japanese food is great, but we Germans also like the "SHOKUJIN" a lot. Maybe I can prepare you all a special dish in the future."

Boy oh boy, that was really a big success ... Not only were all my friends speechless and impressed ... some of them even gagged or went to the loo, leaving for home shortly afterwards.

But when I came to the office the other day with my home made german obento my colleague next to me asked me I I really was a cannibal ... .... hazukashiiii - obviously this was the real meaning there ...

Good food, good friends, meeting new friendly people, improving your Japanese and having a good time. That's how we make our students feel at home. We have one of these parties every first Friday of the month and as always last Friday was nicely crowed and fun. We had a nice mix up of people resulting in a large amount of business cards that were traded and friendships being formed. Our team of cooking sensei's did an awsome job in putting some amazing okonomiyaki and other foodstuffs on the table. There wasn't a person around who didn't like the food.

We would like to thank everyone for coming to the party. Also, we would like to Invite you already for the next time and thank our staff for making sure our stomachs were filled and organising the event. See you next time!

Tennis Thursdays 04-08-2011

Studying is not everything in life. That's why Thursday this week, as on most Thursdays, Asahi Nigongo went out on its tennis activity. Sometimes you have to do other things than studying to stay balanced and Tennis is a good way of getting a bit of physical exercise and having fun. Link this to the 35 degree Celcius heat and you have a great workout, both mentally as physically. We took plenty of water with us and stood on the court for a good 2 hours! In between fun we also played 2 sets which team Ruben-Philipp won over team Michael-Abe with 6-3/6-4 an exiting day which we hope to repeat!

Company anniversary today - 12 years of Asahi Nihongo and Ritter School

Today is our 12th company anniversary. Misa and I found Asahi Nihongo and Ritter School exactly 12 years ago. We are the first language school in Japan that offers Japanese language courses with internships, cultural activities, home stays, language exchange (Tandem) and exciting marine sports. Our school is a place were you not only learn Japanese, but also make Japanese friends. Many thanks to Misa, Ueda sensei, Maya sensei, Junko, Shoko, Yuki, Mauritio, Abe-kun and to my family.

Gyoza Asahi Nihongo Style! 29-7-2011

Want to try the most delicious Gyoza? You should take some classes at our school and wait for Fridays lunchdays. Every week we have lunch and this week the lunch existed of garlic, meat and vegetables wrapped in doughy goodness. It was delicous. Everybody could join helping to make the Gyoza so there were a few foreign forms, nevertheless this did not ruin the taste.

Our staff did an amazing job as always and I believe nobody left without a full stomach and a fullfilled feeling.

Basketball & Baseball activity 28-7-2011

Most people would think that playing sports under the blazing Fukuoka sun is maness. However with a small group of students we got up for it and joined the basketball/sports activity at the Round 1 game centre in Fukuoka, organised by our Japanese course and Internship adviser Junko-san. Now Junko is no newbie when it comes to sports and she showed this by outplaying every student present, adding a couple of lay-ups into the mix for further emberassment and showing who's boss.

This left a group of bewildred students in her wake. Needles to say we had alot of fun. After we ran our lungs out by trying to block Junko throwing hoops we went to do some of the many other sports and games that the game centre had to offer. Hitting some baseballs in the batting cage was extremely fun and Felix surprised everyone by winning the dart game through a mysterious tripple 10 final throw. The tabble tennis and pool games were close games as well due to the fact that everybody turned out to be quite competetive! Everybody left tired but with a smile on their faces.

We would like to thank Junko for organising this aswome day and hope you will join us the next time facing the heat and shooting some hoops with us and our Japanese friends!

Hey there everyone,

I'm Ruben and I'm the intern in charge of Asahi Marine Sports. I'd like to introduce myself a little as to make sure we won't be strangers when we meet. You know me already anyway! I'm from The Netherlands and 25 years old. Currently studying Communication&Media, this will be my final year so I thought let's go to Fukuoka to make it a bit more special and exciting.

I will be involved with everything that involves Asahi Marine Sports and always willing to help if you have questions or if there's a problem. Please don't hesitate to ask!

Fukuoka is a wonderful place to be, but don't forget there is a lot of other stuff to enjoy near Fukuoka. You don't get to be such a great city on the coast without having some awsome beaches and Fukuoka has plenty. Please join us and come to Fukuma beach were you can experience a different side of Japan!!

SOS Kinderdorf and Suginoya beer factory visit 24-7-2011!

Last Sunday we had an all German activity day! The Deutsch Japanische Gesellschaft Westjapan (German Japanese Society of Westjapan) had ready a day full activities for us that decided to join. You did not have to be exclusively Japanese or German to join, so together with some of our German students other nationalities were present too. We kicked off with a visit to the much need SOS Kinderdorf in Imazu. Here we were told why such a refugee village is necessary in light of recent events and what could be done to help. We also good a tour through the village to show what the organisation does. It was a touching experience and the village surely is a comfort to the children and families who have to take shelter there.

After this humbling experience it was time to eat and drown away our sorrows. A visit to the local Suginoya beer brewery was much anticipated. And upon entering what looked like an Old farm building the fun could begin. Beer as much as you can take and an endless supply of German foods took a toll from most of the people present. Expected but still surprising was that everyone`s level of German at the activity was really high! German chatter could be heard throughout the building and at some point Japanese people burst into enthusiastic versions of classical Schubert songs and a number of German drinking songs. A fun note to make about this is that there was allot of interaction with our students. A steady stream of buisness cards went into our hands and we left with our wallet full of introductions.

If you get a chance to join the DJG on one of their German activities please do! You won`t regret it. We would also like to thank everyone for being so kind and welcoming and making our German students feel a little bit at home and our international students welcomed.

BBQ Party!!

This past weekend was absolutely beautiful and was so far the best weekend to experience the beach and the beautiful sea. On Sunday the 17th of July we all from Asahi Nihongo and Ritter school had a BBQ at Fukuma Beach here in the beautiful city of Fukuoka.

We were lucky to have so many of our staff, interns, and students come out and enjoy the fantastic weather here on Fukuma beach and share a memorable summer day that we experienced together.
The great BBQ chef, also the great intern of Asahi Nihongo Abe and a student favorite Shinchiro Kojaku San were in charge of all food cooking and did a wonderful job providing us with delicious meat and vegetables fresh off the grill. They worked hard all day and were committed to producing the best for all staff, students, and interns. We were highly appreciative for the great food and enjoyed watching them cook.
Many connections were made on this beautiful day as the pictures illustrate. Salsa lessons where conducted and instructed by Mauricio Sensei of Ritter school. About 30 of us participated in Salsa lessons and dancing. We all did our best to catch the steps of this sensual and exotic dance and it also helped socially lubricate the beginning of our day here at Fukuma Beach. This part of the day was great and we would like to thank our teacher Mauricio Sensei for being patient and fun.
I guess we can all say that after finishing this day we can reflect and think about what is really important. Our day here at Fukuma Beach has I think allowed many of us to come to a realization that finding a way to enjoy our lives in this ever changing world that is continuously in the motions of globalization is the utmost important aspect of living a healthy and sound life.

Joyou town Mikoshi!!!

After the Yamakase festival a number of our students went to a village called Joyou about one and a half hour drive from Fukuoka. Here everyone was so kind as to let us participate in their yearly festival!Wearing a traditional coat called a happi (not to be confused with happy) our students carried a portable shinto shrine or "Mikoshi" through the town together with the local Japanese. This Mikoshi carrying involves a lot of rhythmic chanting (wa-shu wa-shu wa-shu!) en getting splashed by water to keep cool and become purified. The whole town was both watching and participating which was very intense but more importantly extremely fun and friendly. Everyone welcomed us in such a nice way that we felt a bit like we were a part of a bigger family. Friendships were formed and it was a very good learning experience both in language and culturally.

The curry provided afterwards was gratefully thrown in our, by then very empty, stomachs and as a muscle relaxation exercise the Onsen (japanese hot-spring) visit that followed absolutely necessary. At this point everyone thought they were satisfied, but there was a bonus. We stayed until the last moment. Watching a dance performance, eating takoyaki and watching the huge fireworks at the end of the festival. Yamakasa Festival!!

Fukuoka is a big place so sometimes there are big things happening. The Yamakasa festival is one of these things. It is one of the most exciting and important events of the year and people from all over Japan come to watch. Several beautiful Kazariyamas(decorative portable shrines and floats) are built and displayed in several parts of the city for two weeks. But the highlight of the festival is on exactly 4:59 am on July the 15th when thousands of men from seven districts of Fukuoka race through the streets whilst carrying a smaller but just as heavy float

Together with our students we went to the festival at 4:59 (early!!) to watch this spectacle. Even though some people were a bit tired everyone was exited by the unique atmosphere. The sidewalk was filled with people from all ages and every time a float would race by the whole crowd cheered and encouraged the people participating. The men carrying the shrine were splashed with water, while running with the shrine to keep them cool. Young men, old men but also children all helped together to help race this huge shrine through the streets of Hakata. It was really interesting and sometimes even a bit intimidating! Watching a group of 200 plus people in a traditional outfit from a distance is fine but when a group like that is running towards you you really feel the excitement.

Needless to say we had a lot of fun and we hope you will be joining us when we have our next event or perhaps next year at the Yamakasa Festival!!

IELTS

During my stay in Japan, I have encountered several people who don't really know much about the IELTS.

The IELTS is a standardized English test that measures your ability to think, understand, write, and use the English language in an academic environment, the test's result is an important requirement to apply for schools and universities in English speaking countries such as The U.K., Canada, New Zealand, Australia, The U.S. and other countries in Europe. If you wish to study abroad, perhaps you should learn more about this test, and how to prepare for it.

Japanese elementry school! 13-7-2011

Yesterday Asahi Nihongo went with a number of students to a Japanese elementry school were we could interact with the teachers and schoolchildren from Takatori elementry school.

The trip was fun, the children were kawai and the activities and old style Japanese games that the children prepared for us were difficult!People struggled especially with the Japanese spinning top, but as you can see the children had no trouble with it. activities included caligraphy, origami and a game called Kendama.

Everyone had a great time and we want to thank everyone at the school for making this possible.

Beer brewery! 12-7-2011

Asahi Nihongo has events not only to give Japanese lessons but also Japanese experiences and interaction.

Today we went with a group of International students from Asahi Nihongo and Japanese students from our partner school Ritter to the Asahi brewery to get a taste of one of Japan's most popular beers. Here we learned about the process of brewing the beer as well as gaining knowledge on how such a large brewery functions.Of course a beer tasting can't be excluded from this kind of experience and we made good use of this opportunity.

Except for our driver Alexander, who had to be content with drinking one of Asahi's many non-alcoholic juices. Yoshiko-san then proceeded by out-drinking all of the European students making this trip a memorable one.

An alle Deutschen, Schweizer und Oesterreicher!

Sommer, Sonne, Sonntag...Was kann man da machen?
Die Deutsch-Japanische Gesellschaft Westjapan organisiert fuer den 24. Juli (Sonntag) ein ganz besonderes Sonntagsprogram fuer Euch. Wenn Ihr Deutsche, Schweizer oder Oesterreicher seid, ist es fuer Euch KOSTENLOS!!!!!! Zuerst besucht Ihr zusammen mit den Mitgiedern der DJG das SOS Kinderdorf in Imazu. Das ist eine prima Gelegenheit, um Eure Japanischkenntnisse anzuwenden.
Danach koennt Ihr fuer 2 Stunden in Sugiya, einer Brauerei, soviel Bier trinken und essen, wie Ihr wollt. Um 14 Uhr bringt Euch dann der Bus nach Itoshima auf einen Biomarkt. Danach geht es wieder zurueck, so dass ihr so um 16 Uhr wieder in Tenjin zurueck seid.

Es ist von A-Z alles gesorgt. Ihr braucht nur zu kommen!!!
